Nigeria’s Opposition Parties Have Failed on All Fronts – APC

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Nigeria’s opposition parties, describing them as directionless and lacking credibility.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, the party’s spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, said the APC was deeply concerned about what he called the deteriorating state of the opposition as the nation heads toward the 2027 general elections.

Opposition Losing Relevance

Oladejo said the absence of a credible opposition was unhealthy for democracy, noting that rather than serve as a “watchdog or policy challenger,” opposition parties had “degenerated into a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy.”

“The health of any democracy is measured by the quality, depth, and seriousness of its opposition,  its ideas, organisation, and consistency,” he stated. “Sadly, Nigeria’s opposition has failed woefully on all counts. It lacks leadership, cohesion, and a binding political philosophy.”

He added that many opposition figures who once claimed to stand for ideological purity had now abandoned principle for personal gain.

“The opposition’s moral compass has been completely eroded, leaving behind a band of opportunists united only by their lust for power,” Oladejo said.

Tinubu’s Legacy in Opposition Politics

The APC spokesman contrasted the current situation with the opposition era led by President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a “master political strategist and democrat” who built a movement based on principles and structure.

“Tinubu’s opposition politics was defined by clarity of purpose, ideological direction, and consistency. He offered Nigerians a credible alternative founded on progressivism, good governance, and national unity,” Oladejo said.

He noted that the APC itself was a product of that era of purposeful and issue-driven opposition. “The APC of today is proof of what responsible and visionary opposition can achieve when driven by patriotism rather than ambition,” he added.

Call for Responsible Opposition

Oladejo said the Tinubu administration had remained committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda, implementing “tough but necessary” reforms to reposition the economy and restore national pride.

He faulted opposition parties for failing to present any clear policy direction. “None of them has offered a coherent roadmap for the economy, security, education, or social development. Their only strategy is to attack government policies without offering credible alternatives,” he said.

According to him, the lack of constructive engagement is weakening democracy and discouraging citizens from political participation.

“Democracy thrives on choice, but when one side consistently fails to evolve, citizens lose confidence in the process. Unfortunately, what we have today is a fragmented assemblage of self-appointed messiahs and expired politicians who mistake social media noise for national relevance,” Oladejo concluded.
