Kano Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Deputy Governor

KANO DEPUTY GOVERNOR

The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of the state, Aminu Abdulsalam-Gwarzo, over alleged misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

The development was contained in a report by Leadership Newspaper.

The impeachment notice was presented on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and read during plenary by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Lawmakers said the action was taken in line with Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers a state legislature to initiate impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

A total of 38 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice, while the Speaker directed that the deputy governor be formally served in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The move comes amid growing political tension in Kano State following the defection of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January.

Deputy Governor Abdulsalam-Gwarzo declined to join the governor in the defection and chose to remain in the NNPP.

His decision is believed to have deepened divisions within the state government and fuelled speculation about his political future, leading to the present impeachment proceedings.
