I’ve More Evergreen Songs Than Michael Jackson, Shina Peters Claims

Veteran Juju legend, Oluwashina Peters, popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has asserted that the true legacy of a musician lies not in fame or wealth but in the creation of evergreen songs that stand the test of time.

Speaking during a recent interview, the 67-year-old icon boldly claimed that he has produced more timeless hits than the late American pop superstar Michael Jackson.

“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced. To my credit, I have four evergreens.

Even Michael Jackson has just two of The World and Thriller. So, if I have four, I am accomplished,” Peters said.

Peters, whose energetic style helped redefine Juju music in the 1980s and 1990s, expressed pride in his creative legacy but voiced concern over the direction of Nigeria’s modern music industry.

He lamented that the musical depth and discipline that defined his generation have been “bastardised” by younger artists, whom he accused of prioritizing fame over artistry.

Despite his criticism, Shina Peters remains a celebrated pioneer of Afro-Juju a genre that fused traditional Juju rhythms with modern instrumentation and continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
