NRS Launches Committee to Review Taxation Curriculum in Nigerian Institutions

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has set up a Curriculum Review Committee to strengthen taxation education in Nigerian institutions and improve the country’s tax administration system.

The agency inaugurated the committee on February 24, 2026, at the NRS Academy in Durumi. The move forms part of efforts to modernise tax education and align academic training with the demands of modern tax administration.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Director of the NRS Academy, Adeolu Akinyemi, explained the purpose of the review.

He said the Service will work closely with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to develop a stronger and more relevant taxation curriculum.

According to him, the initiative will ensure that taxation programmes reflect current developments in tax policy and practice.

In addition, the revised curriculum will equip students with practical knowledge needed in today’s tax administration environment.

Committee to Examine Existing Curriculum

The committee will review taxation curricula across Nigerian institutions. It will also recommend updates where necessary.

Specifically, the review will include modern tax policies and recent legislative changes. It will also cover emerging areas such as digital taxation and global tax practices.

Furthermore, officials say the exercise will reduce the gap between classroom learning and real-world tax administration. Authorities expect the revised curriculum to strengthen the link between academic training and professional practice. As a result, graduates will gain better preparation for careers in the tax sector. The initiative will also improve tax awareness among citizens. In turn, it may encourage voluntary tax compliance.

Ultimately, the effort aims to support national revenue generation and economic growth.

Aisha Hamman Mahmoud, Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of the NRS on Research and Statistics, chairs the committee.

Other members include representatives of the Service, academic experts in taxation and fiscal policy, and professionals with experience in tax administration and policy development.

Meanwhile, the committee will complete the curriculum review within 60 days. After that, the Service will release further updates on the implementation of the revised programme.
