Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo on Wednesday, marking a key diplomatic effort to coordinate responses to Sudan’s ongoing war and regional tensions over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The high-level talks, held at the Al-Ittihadiya Presidential Palace, focused on the devastating conflict in Sudan, which has raged since April 2023 between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Both leaders discussed ways to end the violence, stabilise Sudan, and support humanitarian relief for millions affected by the war.
The conflict has already killed tens of thousands and displaced over 14 million people, creating what the UN calls one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
They also reviewed international and regional peace initiatives, signalling renewed cooperation between Cairo and Khartoum in search of a sustainable political solution.

A major point of alignment during the meeting was the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a $5 billion hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile.
Both leaders expressed deep concern over its impact, blaming the dam for recent flooding and reduced water flow that threaten agriculture and livelihoods in both countries.
Their joint stance highlights a shared front against Ethiopia, as Egypt and Sudan continue to push for legally binding agreements on the dam’s operation to protect their vital water resources.
The meeting comes at a time when both nations face mounting security and environmental challenges.

For Egypt, the dam remains a strategic water security issue, while for Sudan, the ongoing war has strained its political and economic systems.
Diplomatic observers say the Cairo meeting could mark a turning point in regional coordination, as Egypt and Sudan seek to align policies on peace efforts, border stability, and Nile Basin negotiations.
