Italy Offers Defence Support to Gulf States Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

Giorgia Meloni says Italy is willing to provide defensive assistance to Gulf countries as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.

Meloni, speaking in a live interview with the Italian radio station RTL 102.5 on Thursday, said Italy does not intend to enter a war but could support Gulf states, particularly in strengthening air defence systems.

According to her, the initiative would be carried out alongside European partners including the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

The prime minister said the move is aimed at protecting tens of thousands of Italian citizens living in the Gulf region, as well as about 2,000 Italian troops stationed there.

She also noted that the Gulf region remains strategically important to Italy due to its role in global energy supply.

Meloni expressed concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning that the situation could trigger wider instability and pose challenges to international law.

The Italian leader said further escalation could have unpredictable consequences and potential economic implications for Italy.

Responding to questions about whether U.S. military bases in Italy could be used for operations against Iran, Meloni said no such request had been made.

She emphasised that Italy is not at war and does not intend to join any military conflict.

Meloni explained that American military facilities in Italy operate under bilateral agreements signed in 1954 and updated over time, allowing several bases in Italy to be made available to the United States.

The prime minister added that her government is closely monitoring the potential economic effects of the crisis, including the risk of speculation that could push up global energy and food prices.
