The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 45-year-old man, Ashiru Bala, for allegedly possessing 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in Kano State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.
He quoted the Kano Strategic Command Commander, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, as saying the suspect was apprehended at his residence in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area, on February 25, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation.
According to him, Bala was intercepted after transporting the consignment from Abuja and was allegedly preparing to deliver it to a local dealer in Kano for illicit consumption.

Muhammad-Maigatari said the suspect admitted to transporting similar illicit substances for about two years and revealed that he had previously worked in township services in Abuja for four years.
He also confirmed receiving substantial payments for each consignment moved, indicating that he was aware of the illegal nature of the activity.
Yahaya-Lawal said the arrest reflects the agency’s determination to protect communities from the dangers associated with illicit drug trafficking.
He noted that intelligence-driven enforcement operations, particularly during periods of increased demand such as festive seasons, remain central to the command’s strategy.
The commander added that the operation forms part of the ongoing Operation Ramadan Mubarak, launched in line with the national campaign for a drug-free society championed by the NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Buba Marwa.
He stressed that the agency would continue to intensify efforts to dismantle drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
