Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is set to visit the United States next week in a strategic push to deepen economic and security cooperation amid rising trade tensions and regional security threats.
The high-stakes trip, his first to the U.S. since Donald Trump’s return to office, comes as Washington raises tariffs on Philippine exports to 20%, up from the 17% previously threatened. Philippine officials say President Marcos will make the case that the U.S. needs a stronger economic ally in Southeast Asia, not a penalised one.
“We Need Economic Strength to Be a True Ally”
“This visit is about more than diplomacy; it’s about ensuring our economic resilience and regional security,” said Raquel Solano, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs. She confirmed that Marcos would raise urgent concerns over the new tariffs during his talks with President Trump.
Trade negotiations are already ongoing in Washington, with both sides hoping for a “mutually acceptable and beneficial” agreement.
Security Concerns: South China Sea and Beyond
Security will also dominate discussions. The two leaders will review growing military cooperation, especially in the South China Sea, where Chinese aggression has triggered multiple confrontations with Philippine vessels. Since taking office, Marcos has tilted the Philippines firmly toward Washington, granting expanded U.S. access to Philippine military bases under their 70-year-old Mutual Defence Treaty.

Joint Drills Fuel Beijing’s Tensions
The two countries have recently ramped up joint drills, including exercises using U.S. Typhon and NMESIS missile systems, moves that have drawn Beijing’s ire and raised tensions across the region.
Beyond the White House, Marcos will meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and top American business leaders eyeing opportunities in the Philippines.
“The goal is clear: economic strength and national security must go hand in hand,” Solano said.
