In a dramatic twist that could reshape Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans, Swedish forward Alexander Isak has formally informed the club of his desire to leave, sparking renewed interest from top European sides, including Liverpool and Arsenal.
Isak, 24, is keen to explore fresh opportunities elsewhere in Europe, ruling out a move to Saudi Arabia despite lucrative interest. His stance has jolted Newcastle’s recruitment strategy after the Magpies missed out on long-term target Hugo Ekitike, who sealed a surprise six-year deal with Liverpool earlier this week.
Premier League Giants Circle
Isak’s desire to move has reignited speculation linking him to Anfield and the Emirates. Both Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, with the former said to be weighing a formal bid, especially if Luis Díaz departs this summer.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Understand Alexander Isak remains a target for Liverpool even after signing Ekitike but depends on Newcastle. If Newcastle opens doors to an exit and #LFC sells Diaz, they can bid after direct contact was made 10 days ago.”
Romano added that while Al Hilal had shown interest, the player is not in active talks with the Saudi Pro League club and prefers to remain in Europe’s top five leagues.
Newcastle Under Pressure
Isak’s decision has left Newcastle scrambling for alternatives, with the club now actively searching for a replacement ahead of preseason’s final stretch. Sources at St James’ Park say the club is reluctant to let go of its record signing unless a substantial offer is tabled.
Signed in 2022 for a reported £63 million, Isak has been a standout performer for the Magpies, scoring 25 goals in 42 starts. His technical skill and composed finishing have made him one of the most coveted young strikers in European football.

However, Newcastle’s financial constraints under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules may force their hand, particularly if they can cash in on a high-value asset like Isak to fund further reinforcements.
What’s Next?
As the window heats up, all eyes are on whether Newcastle will resist or cash in. While no formal bid has been submitted yet, insiders suggest Liverpool may move quickly if Isak’s exit becomes inevitable, especially with Díaz’s future uncertain.
Arsenal, on the other hand, is believed to be keeping close tabs as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options with a clinical forward.
With weeks left in the transfer window, the Isak saga is shaping up to be one of the summer’s biggest stories.
