AFCON 2025: Osimhen Appointed Super Eagles Vice-Captain, Named New Penalty Taker

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been appointed the new assistant captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Osimhen, who will serve as deputy to the newly appointed captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has also been handed the responsibility of taking penalties for the national team.

The latest appointments follow a leadership reshuffle within the Super Eagles after the retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong.

Troost-Ekong had previously served as both team captain and designated penalty taker before stepping down from international football.

Ndidi was officially unveiled as the Super Eagles’ new captain last week, marking a new era for the team’s leadership structure.

Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon remain the other most senior members of the squad, having both been part of the national team setup for nearly a decade. Iwobi is currently the most capped player in the squad, with Simon next in line.

According to SCORENigeria, Osimhen was chosen for the assistant captain role due to his whole-hearted commitment, leadership qualities, and consistent dedication to the Super Eagles.
