A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, has resigned from the party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a decline in the PDP’s credibility and its departure from democratic ideals.
Waziri formally announced his resignation on Monday at the Dogo Tebo Ward Centre in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State. He said the move was in accordance with the PDP constitution, which mandates that withdrawal of membership must be formalised at the ward level.

Founding Member Formalises Exit at Ward Level
Waziri, who played a key role in the formation of the PDP, described his decision as both difficult and necessary. He said the move was informed by the “exigencies of the moment” and a pressing need to reinvigorate Nigeria’s democratic institutions through a new political movement.
“I was a member of PDP, and due to the exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign,” he stated.
“The PDP constitution demands that I come to my ward centre to formalise this action.”
He criticised the PDP’s current leadership and direction, stating that it no longer aligns with the ideals of a credible opposition. Waziri called on his political associates to join him in building a new coalition that prioritises governance and democratic values.
Ward Chairman Also Defects, Joins Waziri in ADC
Responding to the announcement, the PDP Ward Chairman, represented by Malam Muhammad Bomai, accepted Waziri’s resignation with deep regret. He described the former minister as a national figure and party pillar whose absence would be sorely felt.
“On behalf of the party, we accept his resignation with a heavy heart. Waziri has been an institution within the PDP, and we will feel his absence deeply,” Bomai said.
In a surprising turn, Bomai also declared his resignation from the PDP and his immediate defection to the ADC. He cited his alignment with Waziri’s vision for Nigeria’s political future as his reason for leaving the party.
With these defections, political observers say the growing coalition movement under the ADC may further shake the PDP’s internal structure and alter opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
