Plateau Governor Mutfwang Gives Reasons For Joining APC

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally invited him to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Mutfwang made the revelation on Thursday, shortly after officially defecting to the APC.

He said the decision was taken in the interest of Plateau State, rather than for personal gain, and as a mark of respect for President Tinubu, who he said has shown a consistent interest in the state and its challenges.

He explained that although the President had extended the invitation several times in the past, he had initially declined.

“I pay my respects to President Tinubu for honouring our earlier decisions not to move to the APC and still maintaining a cordial relationship with us despite that,” Mutfwang said during a meeting with political appointees and stakeholders at the Government House in Jos.

PDP Crisis Further Convinced Me to Join APC

The governor added that prominent figures, including other APC governors, had also encouraged him to defect, but he remained committed to his decision until recent developments in the PDP.

“The PDP at the national level is facing undeniable structural problems. While we have no significant challenges at the state level, our efforts would be futile without a solid national structure,” he said.

Mutfwang stressed that remaining in the PDP posed too many risks for Plateau State and could jeopardize the mandate given to him by the people.

“Considering the difficulties our people have endured, we cannot, by action or inaction, subject them to another similar experience,” he said.

He acknowledged that he could have joined another party, but noted the cordial relationship the Tinubu administration has maintained with Plateau State influenced his decision.

“Although we have had issues with Plateau APC, we cannot overlook the support and cooperation from the Tinubu-led government. Given the opportunities for appointments and development that could benefit Plateau, it is prudent to join the APC,” he said.

Governor Mutfwang also hinted at forthcoming positive developments for the state, asking residents to “stay tuned” for announcements.
