Obidients, ADA Lead 110 Groups Seeking INEC Registration

By Rafiyat Sadiq

The Obidient Peoples Party and the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA) are among 110 political associations that have formally submitted applications to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be registered as political parties ahead of the next general elections.

The Obidient Peoples Party, which has Mr. Barry Avotu Johnson listed as the pro tem national chairman, is one of two applications linked to the Obidient movement, a political wave that gained momentum through the 2023 presidential campaign of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.

The second application carries the name Progressive Obedients Party.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA) has emerged as a proposed political platform backed by a coalition of prominent political figures, including former Vice President and PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats.

Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed the development during a press briefing on Wednesday. He stated that all 110 requests, as of Monday, June 23, 2025, are being reviewed in line with Nigeria’s electoral laws and the commission’s guidelines.

“We are diligently processing the requests in accordance with the law, as well as the commission’s regulations and guidelines,” Yakubu noted. “All applications received have been acknowledged.”
