Women Affairs Ministry, NPC Join Forces to Boost Birth Registration, Improved Population Data Access

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, has expressed the ministry’s readiness to partner with the National Population Commission (NPC) on community mobilisation and sensitisation of women to participate actively in NPC initiatives.

The Minister disclosed this while receiving a delegation from the NPC led by its Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, during a courtesy visit to her Abuja office.

In a statement signed and made available to Journalists by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Lawan Danbazau, the NPC’s initiative includes the ongoing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) programs and the forthcoming Population and Housing Census.

Hajiya Imaan highlighted the challenges faced by women in society, stressing that reliable population data is essential for designing targeted interventions.

“These are the kind of issues we want to address together, ensuring that children are properly registered, whether at the community level or in hospitals, and that we have the opportunity to study and understand our population dynamics,” she said.

She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting inclusive national development through a dependable database, with emphasis on gender equity, protection of children, and empowerment of families.

NPC’s chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs to support gender-responsive policies, expand birth registration coverage, and improve access to reliable population data for national development.

He commended the ministry for its pivotal role in advancing the welfare, protection, and empowerment of women, children, and families across Nigeria.

As custodian of population statistics and CRVS, the NPC remains dedicated to producing accurate and timely data to guide evidence-based policymaking, equitable service delivery, and inclusive national planning.

Highlighting areas of cooperation, the NPC Chairman identified strengthening birth registration, particularly for the girl child, as a priority, noting that birth registration provides every child with a legal identity, a critical step to accessing education, healthcare, and social protection services.

Dr. Yusuf also praised the Ministry for its leadership in preparing for the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), where both agencies are expected to contribute to discussions on advancing the rights of the girl child and women of reproductive age.
