The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian travellers against visa overstays and fraudulent practices, noting that such actions could have far-reaching consequences for future applicants.
In a statement shared via its X handle on Monday, April 27, the mission stressed that strict compliance with U.S. immigration rules is essential to maintaining fair and open access for genuine travellers.
It explained that visa overstays or violations of entry conditions by individuals can negatively influence how applications from Nigerians are assessed, potentially affecting future visa approvals.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
The mission noted that many Nigerians travel to the United States for education, business, tourism, and family visits, urging all travellers to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay.

The U.S. Mission also raised concerns about visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, warning that such activities undermine the integrity of the immigration system.
It called on members of the public to support efforts to curb fraud by reporting suspicious activities through official consular fraud prevention channels.
According to the mission, individuals with credible information can report cases via AbujaFPU@state.gov and LagosFPU@state.gov.
