Local Airlines Threaten Nationwide Flight Suspension Over Jet Fuel Price Hike

Indigenous carriers under the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have issued a warning that they may suspend flight operations from Monday if the Federal Government fails to intervene in the sharp rise in aviation fuel prices.

The operators described the increase as “unwarranted,” noting that the price of aviation fuel has surged from about ₦900 per litre to over ₦3,300 per litre an increase they say is more than 300 per cent since late February 2026.

In a letter signed by AON President, Alhaji Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina, and dated April 14, 2026, the association said it had notified the Presidency, Vice President’s office, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Department of State Services over what it termed an “artificial and unsustainable” price hike.

The group argued that the increase is not in line with global crude oil price movements, which they say have risen by about 30 per cent, insisting that local jet fuel prices are far above international benchmarks.

According to the operators, airlines have continued to absorb rising costs in recent weeks in the interest of national service, but warned that the situation has now become “unbearable” and “unsustainable.”

They further stated that current revenues can no longer cover fuel costs alone, let alone other operational expenses, adding that one airline has already grounded operations since March 13, 2026 due to the crisis.

AON cautioned that continued price escalation could force more carriers to shut down, with wider economic consequences including job losses, financial sector strain, and increased insecurity.

The association urged government to engage fuel marketers and ensure pricing aligns with international market realities, warning that if no action is taken, all member airlines will suspend operations effective Monday, April 20, 2026.
