Tinubu Removes IGP Kayode Egbetokun; Tunji Disu to Succeed Him

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly ordered the removal of Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector General of Police.

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Egbetokun is to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, who is currently the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

The development was confirmed by senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission, according to SaharaReporters.

A source told SaharaReporters that Egbetokun had been instructed at the Presidential Villa to prepare handover notes and would formally hand over to Disu. “He is incompetent and the scandals are just too many. He is power-drunk. The President said he should leave to focus on getting treatment for himself. He has kidney-related medical issues,” the source said.

Reports indicated that some police officers celebrated the news of his removal. “Police officers jubilated on Monday when they heard the news. The First Lady, Remi Tinubu, wanted him to stay, but the President was adamant,” the source added.

Egbetokun’s tenure was marked by controversies, including his extended stay beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service. Critics argued that his prolonged service violated police rules and reflected favoritism.

During his term, concerns were raised over the rapid promotion of Bukola Yemisi Kuti, a principal staff officer to Egbetokun, who was reportedly also personally linked to him.

Allegations also emerged that ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote was traced to the account of Egbetokun’s son, Victor, prompting claims of misappropriation, SaharaReporters revealed.

Observers told SaharaReporters that the legal battles reinforced perceptions that Egbetokun relied on state power to shield himself from scrutiny instead of addressing allegations through transparent investigations.
