President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of the former First Lady of Ogun State, Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabanjo, who passed away at the age of 101.

Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, died on Monday, January 12, 2026.

In a condolence message released on Tuesday, January 13, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late former First Lady as a compassionate woman whose life was devoted to service, particularly to women and children.

The president extended his sympathies to the Onabanjo family, friends, and associates, noting that testimonies from those who encountered her during her lifetime reflected her far-reaching impact on her community, Ogun State, and the nation.

President Highlights Legacy, Calls for Immortalisation

Tinubu praised Lucia Onabanjo’s steadfast support for her husband during his tenure as governor from 1979 to 1983 and her commitment to charity and social causes.

“Lucia Onabanjo’s strong support for her husband when he served as Ogun State Governor for four years, 1979–1983, was commendable, and her keen interest in issues of children and empowerment of women was exemplary,” the president said.

He added that her kindness would continue to resonate beyond her lifetime and urged the Ogun State Government to immortalise her contributions to the state.

Nigerians Pay Tribute to Late Former First Lady

Following the announcement of her death, Nigerians took to social media to mourn the former First Lady and celebrate her life of service.

An Extraordinary Ustaz, speaking on behalf of the Onabanjo family, thanked President Tinubu for his condolences, describing Lucia Onabanjo as the family’s matriarch and appreciating the honour accorded her legacy.

Al Hassan Watara prayed for her peaceful repose, noting that her dedication to women and children would continue to inspire generations.

Anthony Ogunniyi recalled her humility and compassion, saying she lived simply among the people of Fidipote, Ijebu Ode, despite being the wife of a former governor.

Others also offered prayers for the Tinubu administration and the nation.

Lucia Onabanjo was widely regarded as a pillar of support during her husband’s administration and for her lifelong commitment to humanitarian causes across Ogun State.
