The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached an agreement on a 40 per cent salary increase and better academic allowances for university lecturers.
The agreement was signed during a formal ceremony attended by government officials and ASUU leaders. As a result, lecturers can now expect improved welfare and incentives for their work.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, explained that the 40 per cent increase will be implemented through a restructured Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA).

He said the allowance covers essential academic needs, including journal publications, conference participation, internet access, learned society membership, and books. This ensures lecturers have the tools they need for teaching and research.
Alausa added that the reform links nine academic allowances directly to lecturers’ duties, making them clear and fair. “These allowances are now clearly structured and directly tied to duties performed,” he said.
“This change promotes productivity, accountability, and fairness across universities.”
In addition, the allowance package now includes better support for postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, exam moderation, and leadership roles within tertiary institutions.
Alausa described the MoU as a major step forward for university staff welfare and said it would strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system.
