Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Belem, Brazil, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 6.

The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in collaboration with international partners, will be held in the Amazonian capital of Pará State.

Themed Climate Action and Implementation,” the conference will focus on adaptation, forest protection, biodiversity, and climate justice.

According to a statement by Shettima’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president will join other world leaders, development partners, and business executives for high-level discussions on key environmental issues.

Nigeria’s Position on Climate Action

Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the general plenary on the opening day of the conference, where he will highlight the country’s climate action strategies and commitments.

He will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund and attend a roundtable discussion on Climate and Nature, chaired by President Lula.

Later in the evening, he will join other heads of delegation at an Amazonian Cocktail event hosted by the Brazilian leader.

Focus on Energy Transition and Carbon Markets

On the second day, the vice president will attend further roundtables on Energy Transition and the Review of the Paris Agreement, with particular emphasis on implementing countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions and strengthening global climate finance.

Shettima will also hold bilateral meetings aimed at deepening Nigeria’s participation in the global carbon market.

The discussions are expected to open up opportunities for the country to access between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon financing over the next decade to support emission reduction targets.

Strengthening Nigeria–Brazil Ties

Following the summit, Shettima will proceed to Brasília for a diplomatic visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who was in Nigeria earlier in June.

During his stay in Brasília, Shettima will lead talks aimed at strengthening Nigeria–Brazil relations under the South–South cooperation framework.

He is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his official engagements in Brazil.
