The Senate says it was not aware of the United States airstrikes carried out on Nigerian territory, according to Abdul Ningi, senator representing Bauchi Central.

Ningi made the disclosure while speaking during plenary on Tuesday, warning that such attacks could expose Nigeria to actions by other countries and foreign powers.

Raising a point of order on privileges, the lawmaker called for the summoning of the nation’s service chiefs to explain the circumstances surrounding the airstrikes.

He argued that the United States does not have the authority to carry out or attempt airstrikes on terrorist camps or locations within Nigeria.

According to Ningi, the development amounted to a constitutional breach, stressing that members of the National Assembly were not informed before the strikes were carried out.

“The Senate should order the service chiefs to brief the Senate on the territorial integrity of the country,” he said.

Recall that US President Donald Trump  has earlier announced that the American military conducted airstrikes in Nigeria.

Trump said he authorised what he described as a “powerful and deadly strike” against ISIS-affiliated terrorists operating in northwest Nigeria.

The airstrikes, for which the Nigerian government admitted providing intelligence, reportedly targeted terrorist locations in Sokoto State.
