APC wins 5, PDP secures 1 council in FCT 2026 Area Council Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won five chairmanship seats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured one seat.

The elections were conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada, and Kuje.

A total of about 637 candidates from 17 political parties contested the elections for 68 positions, comprising 62 councillorship seats and six area council chairmanships. Five of the area councils have 10 wards each, while AMAC has 12 wards.

In AMAC, the incumbent chairman, Christopher Maikalangu (APC), was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast.
The Collation Officer for AMAC, Prof. Andrew Abue, said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the PDP polled 3,398 votes.

According to him, the scores of the 12 political parties and their candidates that contested the AMAC chairmanship election are:

Agbon Vaniah of the Accord (A)-403 votes

Nemiebika Tamunomiesam of the Action Alliance (AA)-108 votes

Paul Ogidi of African Democratic Congress (ADC)-12,109 votes

Richard Elizabeth of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) -588 votes

Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-40,295 votes

Eze Chukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-1,111 votes

Chukwu Promise of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM)-122 votes.

Ugoh Michael of the Action Peoples Party(APP)-32 votes

Thomas Happiness of the Boot Party (BP)-43 votes.

Jibrin Alhassan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-1,694 votes.

Samson Usani of the National Rescue Movement (NRM)-73 votes.

Dantani Zanda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-3,398 votes

Iber Shimakaha of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP)-90 votes

Simon Obinna of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)-2,185 votes

Madaki Robert of the Young Progressives Party (YPP)- 421 votes; and

Swani Buba of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)-189 votes.

According to Abue, 2,336 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 65,197. He added that AMAC had 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 accredited voters.

APC Wins Bwari Area Council

In the Bwari Area Council, Joshua Ishaku (APC) was declared winner after scoring 18,466 votes.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, announced the results on Sunday, stating that the ADC candidate polled 4,254 votes, while the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate scored 3,515 votes.

The election was conducted in 10 wards: Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari Central, and Kawu, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

APC Wins Kwali Area Council

In the Kwali Area Council, Daniel Nuhu (APC) won the chairmanship seat with 17,032 votes, defeating PDP candidate Haruna Pai, who polled 8,575 votes.

The results were declared by the INEC presiding officer at Kwali’s final collation centre on Sunday morning.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that elections were held in all ten wards of Kwali on Saturday.

PDP Wins Gwagwalada Chairmanship Seat

Kasim Mohammed of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after polling 22,165 votes.

The candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Usman Yahaya, came second with 17,788 votes, while Ezekiel Biko of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) scored 1,687 votes.

The result was announced by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the collation centre in Gwagwalada, making the council the only one won by the PDP in the FCT Area Council elections.

APC’s Abdullahi wins Abaji Chairmanship Election

In Abaji Area Council, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar (APC) emerged winner with 15,535 votes, defeating his closest rival from the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who scored 5,357 votes.

The PDP followed with 4,547 votes, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ADC recorded 53 and 37 votes, respectively.

APC Wins Kuje Area Council

In Kuje Area Council, Samuel Danjuma (APC) won the chairmanship election after polling 17,269 votes, a slim victory over his rivals, according to the final results officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The PDP candidate, Danlami Zakwoyi, came second with 15,824 votes, while Danladi Abdullahi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) scored 4,305 votes.

With the APC winning  Kuje, AMAC, Bwari, Kwali and Abaji and the PDP securing Gwagwalada, the ruling party clinched five of the six area councils, leaving the opposition with one seat.
