Democracy Day: Tinubu Set to Inaugurate Major FCT Projects

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike has declared that major infrastructure projects scheduled for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu this week are fully completed and ready for commissioning.

Speaking on Monday during an inspection tour of ongoing and completed projects across Abuja, Wike expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, saying the FCT administration had successfully delivered on its project timelines.

According to the minister, several strategic road projects have reached 100 per cent completion and are awaiting inauguration by the president as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.

Wike disclosed that the inauguration programme would commence today with the commissioning of the OSEX Road project, one of the major infrastructure developments undertaken by the FCT administration.

He added that President Tinubu would inaugurate the N5 Road in the Life Camp area on June 10, while the Airport Road–Kuje Road project is scheduled for commissioning on June 11.

“Those three projects are 100 per cent complete and ready for inauguration,” the minister stated.

He commended the contractors handling the projects for fulfilling their obligations and adhering to agreed delivery schedules.

“I commend the various contractors involved for keeping to their promises,” he said.

Court of Appeal Residences for Commissioning

Beyond the road infrastructure, Wike announced that the newly completed official residences for Justices of the Court of Appeal would be inaugurated on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

He noted that the project was executed by a local contractor whose performance met expectations.

“I do know that on Friday, which is June 12, we are also going to commission the residences of the Court of Appeal. The work is quite satisfactory,” he said.

The minister expressed delight at the positive feedback from residents of the Federal Capital Territory, noting that public appreciation of ongoing infrastructure improvements was motivating the administration to do more.

According to him, the visible transformation taking place across Abuja reflects the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.

Wike Explains Delay in Bus Terminal Operations

Addressing concerns over the non-operation of one of Abuja’s bus terminals nearly a year after its inauguration, Wike attributed the delay to procurement requirements and administrative procedures involved in transferring management to a private operator.

He explained that despite the completion and inauguration of the facility, government regulations required a transparent procurement process before private sector participation could commence.

According to the minister, all necessary approvals have now been secured from the Federal Executive Council (FEC), while the selected operator is making final preparations to begin operations.

“For you to give a private individual the responsibility to run government facilities, it has to pass through the procurement process,” he said.

Wike revealed that the operator had informed the administration that arrangements were underway to assemble the buses and taxis needed for the smooth take-off of the terminal.

“What is important is that I have got the approval from the Federal Executive Council, and the contractor to manage the facilities has pleaded with us that he is assembling the buses and taxis to make sure it takes off,” he added.

The minister appealed to residents for patience, insisting that the government had no intention of allowing a facility built with public funds to remain unused.

“Why do you think the government would spend its money and then not put such a place into use?” he queried.

On whether President Tinubu would visit any of the six area councils during the inauguration activities, Wike confirmed that such visits were under consideration but declined to disclose specific locations for security reasons.

“Very much. But when we get to that day, we will let you know. For security reasons, we won’t tell you which area council he will visit,” he said.

Describing the inauguration week as a significant milestone for the FCT Administration, Wike attributed the achievements to the support and leadership provided by President Tinubu.

He stressed that effective leadership is demonstrated not only by initiating new projects but also by ensuring the completion of inherited ones for the benefit of citizens.

“The credit must go to Mr President, who has given the directive and support for us to go this far,” he said.

“One of the things about leadership has to do with the will to continue with projects that may not have been initiated by you but the ability to complete those projects.”

Wike also hinted that temporary traffic disruptions could occur during the inauguration ceremonies, noting that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would issue appropriate traffic advisories to guide residents and commuters.

The week-long commissioning exercise forms part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration and is expected to showcase major infrastructure projects delivered by the FCT Administration under the Tinubu government.
