Dangote Refinery Emerges Top Jet Fuel Exporter

Dangote Refinery Drags Nigerian Govt to Court over Fuel Import Licences

In a major shift for global energy trade, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery emerged as the world’s single largest exporter of jet fuel in April 2026.

This was revealed in a recent S&P Global Energy report. According to the S&P Global Commodities at Sea data, the facility was able to surpass all other global exporters by making a strategic pivot.

From Regional Producer to Global Leader

Sustained production ramp up at the 650,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) facility based in Lekki, Lagos Nigeria, coincided with the global market disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis. With escalating tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States restricting traffic through critical energy corridors like the Strait of Hormuz, global aviation markets pivoted sharply toward West Africa for a stable alternative.

According to data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea and shipping analytics firm Kpler, the refinery’s CEO, David Bird, confirmed that the facility shifted into “max jet mode” to capitalize on the supply chain realignments.

The operational scale achieved by the facility highlights its rapid transition from a regional asset to an international hub.

Rising Export Figures

Shipment data compiled by analytics firm Kpler showed that the refinery’s jet fuel exports surged by about 770 percent between April 2024 and April 2026.

Export volumes reportedly climbed from about 18,000 barrels per day (bpd) during the early phase of operations to a record 158,000 bpd in April 2026.

The dramatic shift in trade flows is directly attributed to instability in the Middle East. The conflict created uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route through which about one-fifth of global oil and fuel supplies pass.

Threats to maritime security tightened supply chains and forced aviation fuel buyers in Europe and elsewhere to seek alternative suppliers outside the traditional Middle Eastern hubs and Dangote was uniquely positioned to fill this void.

Global Trading Ambitions

Beyond the current level, Bird noted that the company is transitioning into a global trading hub, with long-term plans to double its production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.
