The United Kingdom Government has opened applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarships, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities at universities across the UK to emerging leaders and professionals from around the world.
In a statement issued on Monday, the UK Government said applications for the prestigious scholarship programme will run from August 4 to October 6, 2026, with successful applicants gaining access to world-class education, professional networks and lifelong connections through the global Chevening community.
Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, the programme targets individuals with strong leadership potential, networking skills and a commitment to driving sustainable development and tackling global challenges.
Head of the Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, Emma Hennessey, said Chevening is looking for exceptional individuals willing to work with the UK in building a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future.
She said the scholarship programme is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive community of future leaders and encouraged applications from under-represented groups.

According to her, successful applicants are selected not only for their academic and professional achievements but also for their leadership potential, ability to build meaningful connections and commitment to creating lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
“Through access to UK education, networks and experiences, Chevening equips future leaders with the tools and connections needed to address shared international challenges together,” she said.
Hennessey urged prospective applicants to carefully consider Chevening’s vision and objectives and reflect on how their experiences and ambitions align with the programme’s mission.
‘More Than a Scholarship’
Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as more than an academic scholarship, saying it provides scholars with the opportunity to become part of a global network of leaders committed to driving positive change.
According to him, scholars benefit from world-class education, exposure to UK values and culture, and lifelong professional connections that equip them with the knowledge, skills and networks required to tackle today’s global challenges and advance sustainable development.
“If you have a clear vision for making a meaningful impact in areas of shared priority between Nigeria and the UK, I encourage you to apply and take the next step in your leadership journey,” Baxter said.
How to Apply
The UK Government advised prospective applicants to review the programme’s vision and eligibility requirements before submitting their applications through the Chevening online application portal.
Established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals from over 140 countries and territories, many of whom now occupy leadership positions in government, business, academia and civil society across the world.
