The Nigerian government and the United Kingdom have taken steps to update their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration Management and Returns, in a bid to enhance lawful migration processes, security collaboration, and economic cooperation between both countries.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during a meeting in Abuja with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.
According to the minister, the review of the agreement is aimed at ensuring more efficient, lawful, and humane migration processes, while strengthening bilateral security cooperation and expanding economic opportunities for both Nigeria and the UK.
Tunji-Ojo described migration management as a shared responsibility and a critical pillar of Nigeria’s strategic security partnership with the United Kingdom. He noted that collaboration between both nations on migration justice has spanned more than two decades.
A statement issued by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Mary Ali, indicated that both countries are working to finalise the updated MoU on Migration and Returns.
The minister expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued support in intelligence sharing, technical assistance, and operational coordination.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the immigration system, improving passport administration, and facilitating legitimate mobility, while safeguarding national security and economic interests.
Tunji-Ojo further emphasised the need to strike a strategic balance between effective border control and economic growth, adding that facilitating credible investment aligns with the Federal Government’s broader economic reform agenda.
