Big Win for Nigerian Police as Tinubu Signs Bill Establishing Training Institutes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the bill establishing the Nigeria Police Training Institutes, marking a significant step toward professionalising the nation’s law enforcement system.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the development during Tuesday’s plenary session, confirming that the President had formally granted his constitutional assent to the bill.
“The Nigerian Police Force Training Institutions Establishment Bill 2025 amendment, further to our letter from the Clerk forwarding the authenticated copies of the bills for Mr. President’s constitutional assent, I hereby return two copies duly signed by Mr. President, who has granted assent and seal of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Akpabio told lawmakers.
Law to Strengthen Internal Security Architecture
With the new law, the Federal Government will establish specialised police training institutes in designated areas across the country.
The move is aimed at improving the professionalism of police officers, modernising training standards, and strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Akpabio noted that the establishment of the institutes aligns with the government’s broader effort to reform the security sector, enhance capacity development, and promote efficiency within the police force.
Legislative Background
The bill was initially passed by the Senate in December 2024 following extensive deliberations on the need to upgrade training facilities and build a structured framework for continuous professional development within the police.
Lawmakers had emphasised that modern policing requires advanced technical knowledge and regular retraining to address evolving security threats, particularly in counterterrorism, cybercrime, and intelligence operations.
Institutional Impact
The Nigeria Police Training Institutes are expected to serve as regional hubs for specialised instruction in crime prevention, investigation, human rights compliance, and community policing.
Security experts believe the law will provide a foundation for a more efficient and accountable police service capable of meeting the challenges of modern law enforcement.
