AI Challenges Transform Youth Employability in Kenya, Report Reveals

A new report unveiled at the United Nations General Assembly in New York shows that Kenya’s young people are using artificial intelligence (AI) platforms to boost career prospects and secure better jobs.

The 2025 Country-Level Employability Report for Kenya, developed by Zindi in collaboration with Dalberg Data Insights, the International Centre for AI Research and Ethics, and the Presidency of Kenya, shows how AI-driven challenges are reshaping the job market.

The study tracked over 8,000 Kenyan users on Zindi, Africa’s largest platform for data science and AI challenges. Nearly one in five participants reported a career change after joining, with active users enjoying far better outcomes than inactive ones.

  • More than 80% of users with complete profiles advanced in their careers, compared to only 3% with incomplete profiles.
  • Completing four or more challenges made participants four times more likely to secure employment.
  • Working in teams tripled job opportunities.
  • Even one online course boosted employability outcomes threefold.

The report stresses that classroom learning alone cannot prepare Africa’s youth for the digital economy. Instead, employability now depends on practical problem-solving, peer collaboration, and community-driven innovation.

Kenya’s case shows how AI platforms can prepare young people for the future of work while positioning them to contribute to the global innovation ecosystem.

For governments and educators, the lesson is clear: integrating applied and practice-based learning into national AI strategies delivers real results. With Africa’s youth population growing rapidly, Kenya’s success points to the role AI platforms can play in driving opportunity, growth, and inclusive prosperity across the continent.
