ActionAid Demands Impeachment of Governors Over Alleged Use of State Funds for 2027 Campaigns

ActionAid Nigeria has called for impeachment proceedings to be instituted against any state governor found culpable of diverting state resources to finance political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation’s call followed allegations that some serving governors may be mobilising state resources to finance political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The concerns gained traction amid growing conversations within governance and civil society circles, where reports of large-scale political financing linked to incumbents began to circulate. These discussions, which have since entered the public domain, raised urgent questions about the source of the funds being deployed for political mobilisation.

The controversy reportedly emerged from a build-up of concerns within policy and accountability spaces, where stakeholders began questioning the scale and origin of funds allegedly being used for early political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

While no specific governors were named, ActionAid Nigeria said the pattern of allegations points to possible misuse of public resources, warning that such practices, if confirmed, would represent a serious breach of public trust and democratic ethics.

Nigerians Deserve Answers — ActionAid Speaks

Speaking in Abuja, ActionAid Nigeria Country Director, Dr. Andrew Mamedu, described the situation as deeply troubling, insisting that Nigerians deserve full transparency on how political activities are being funded.

“It is appalling that at a time when Nigeria is drowning in debt, citizens are struggling with inflation and hunger, and public services are under severe pressure, there are allegations that state resources are being used for political campaigns,” he said.

Mamedu stressed that governors are not elected to convert state resources into political war chests, adding that public office holders must clearly explain whether campaign-related funds are sourced from legitimate private fundraising or public coffers.

ActionAid Nigeria called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch immediate forensic investigations into the allegations.

It also urged State Houses of Assembly to activate oversight functions without political bias, warning that failure to act could deepen public distrust and weaken democratic accountability.

Impeachment, Prosecution and Sanctions Demanded

The organisation said any governor found guilty of diverting public resources for partisan political purposes must face strict consequences, including impeachment, prosecution, asset recovery, and disqualification from future public office.

“Such conduct is a direct violation of public trust. It is not just unethical, it is a betrayal of the mandate given by citizens,” Mamedu said.

ActionAid cautioned that unchecked misuse of state resources could distort the electoral process ahead of 2027, giving incumbents an unfair advantage over other political actors.

It stressed that this could further weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions and deepen inequality in political competition.

The organisation reiterated that while political parties are free to organise and raise funds, all campaign financing must strictly come from lawful private sources.

It warned against the use of government machinery, procurement systems, security votes, and state institutions for political mobilisation, describing such actions as a violation of democratic principles.

ActionAid referenced countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, and South Africa, noting that strict legal frameworks exist to prevent misuse of public resources for political gain.

It said violations in such democracies often result in resignations, criminal investigations, impeachment, or removal from office.

The organisation urged Nigerians, civil society groups, journalists, whistleblowers, and public servants to remain vigilant and report any suspected misuse of public funds.

“The story became a national concern because of growing fears that public resources may be quietly diverted to strengthen political structures ahead of 2027,” Mamedu noted.

He added that defending democracy requires collective responsibility beyond institutions alone.

ActionAid warned that failure to address the allegations decisively could erode public trust and compromise the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Defending democracy requires collective vigilance. Nigerians must protect their resources and ensure that public office is not turned into a tool for political domination,” Mamedu said.
