No fewer than 8,433 delegates are set to participate in the 2026 national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), holding at Eagle Square, Abuja.

The event is expected to be attended by President Bola Tinubu, 31 state governors, and members of the Federal Executive Council.

Idris Unveils Plans, Calls for Unity

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a meeting with journalists in Abuja, where he outlined preparations for the convention slated for March 27 and 28.

Idris, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, highlighted the level of readiness, logistics, and communication strategy for the exercise.

He urged members of the committee to work in unity to ensure effective dissemination of information and the smooth conduct of the convention.

According to him, members must be ready to make sacrifices in line with the party’s vision of presenting a united and disciplined front to Nigerians.

Focus on Internal Democracy

The minister emphasised the need for the party to uphold strong internal democratic values, noting that members must reflect the leadership style of the president.

He described the convention as a significant milestone in the APC’s efforts to strengthen its internal structures and democratic processes.

Consensus Method for Leadership Selection

Meanwhile, the party has indicated it will adopt a consensus approach in selecting its national leaders during the convention.

The APC Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity, Mary Ikoku, had earlier stated during a television programme that while consensus would be used for national positions, decisions on elective offices during primaries may vary depending on local political realities.

Top Party Leaders in Attendance

The stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the convention was attended by governors, members of the National Convention Central Coordination Committee, and other key party figures.

Also present were the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare.

Convention to Shape 2027 Elections

The convention is expected to produce new national executives who will steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The incoming leadership will be responsible for organising party primaries that will produce candidates for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly elections.
