The Nigerian government has warned foreign missions and international organisations against making what it described as “unguarded comments” on the country’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, issued the warning on Thursday during a briefing with members of the diplomatic corps at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting was her first formal engagement with members of the diplomatic corps since she assumed office in April.
Speaking on the principles of reciprocity and mutual respect, the minister said Nigeria remained open to meaningful partnerships but urged foreign missions to respect the country’s sovereignty and institutions.

“We would not accept unguarded comments, disparaging remarks, or unsolicited lectures on democracy from any country or international organisation,” she said.
Tinubu Committed To Democracy – Odumegwu-Ojukwu
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the administration of President Bola Tinubu was committed to democracy and would work towards delivering a peaceful, free, fair and credible election in 2027.
She urged diplomats to regard the foreign affairs ministry as a partner in achieving their legitimate objectives in Nigeria rather than merely as a bureaucratic institution.
“In return, we ask that Nigeria’s institutions, sovereignty and diplomatic processes be accorded the same respect that we extend to yours,” she added.
The minister said Nigeria remained open to cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, technology, knowledge and other areas of mutual interest.
She also said the country would continue to promote dialogue, multilateralism and peaceful resolution of disputes.
She maintained that, Nigeria would remain active in regional and international bodies, including the Economic Community of West African States, African Union, United Nations, Commonwealth and other international institutions.
