Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tems is set to share the stage with some of the world’s biggest music stars, including Stevie Wonder and John Legend, at the official opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
The landmark event, scheduled for June 18, will mark the unveiling of a centre designed to preserve the legacy of former U.S. President Barack Obama while serving as a museum, library, educational hub, community space, conference facility and the headquarters of the Obama Foundation.
Obama announced the impressive lineup in an Instagram reel presented as a light-hearted conversation, introducing a diverse group of performers expected to headline the historic celebration.
Beyond Tems, Stevie Wonder and John Legend, the event will feature performances from Bono and The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common, Eddie Vedder, Jennifer Hudson and Latin music superstar Marc Anthony.
Also expected at the event are actress and producer Marsai Martin and acclaimed hip-hop group The Roots.
A Centre Dedicated to Leadership and Community Development
The Obama Presidential Centre is envisioned as more than a historical monument. Organisers say it will serve as a hub for leadership development, civic engagement, education and community empowerment.
The facility is expected to provide young people with opportunities to learn about leadership, public service and social change while preserving the story and achievements of the Obama presidency.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama described the opening as a deeply emotional and personal milestone for her family and the South Side Chicago community where she grew up.
In a social media post, she recalled how the area was once dominated by a highway and an underutilised park space that many residents considered unsafe.
“The opening of the Presidential Centre right here on the South Side of Chicago is truly a full-circle moment,” she said.
Michelle Obama explained that she spent much of her childhood and teenage years passing through the area and never imagined it would one day become home to a world-class institution dedicated to history, hope, art and leadership.
Creating Hope for Future Generations
According to her, one of the most rewarding aspects of the project is the opportunity it creates for young people from the community.
She said the centre will give children a place where they can see themselves reflected, connect with one another and be inspired to pursue leadership and positive change.
“It means so much to Barack and me to open up the Obama Presidential Centre on the South Side of Chicago. This is where I grew up, where Barack got his start, and where we raised our girls,” she said.
She added that creating a space where young people can channel hope, ambition and community spirit is among the most powerful legacies the centre can leave behind.
