Foreign Capital Inflows Surge as Nigeria Attracts $23.2bn in 2025

Nigeria attracted $23.21 billion in foreign capital in 2025, marking an 88.5 per cent increase from $12.31 billion recorded in 2024.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) disclosed this in its Capital Importation Report for 2025. The data reflects renewed investor interest in the economy.

Capital inflows started the year at $5.64 billion in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, inflows dropped by 9.2 per cent to $5.12 billion. However, the trend reversed in the third quarter, as inflows rose by 17.4 per cent to $6.01 billion.

The fourth quarter recorded the strongest performance. Capital importation climbed by 7.15 per cent to $6.44 billion. This also represents a 26.61 per cent increase compared to $5.09 billion in Q4 2024.

Portfolio Investments Dominate

Portfolio investment led all categories in Q4 2025. It accounted for $5.49 billion, representing 85.14 per cent of total inflows.

Other investments contributed $599.65 million, making up 9.31 per cent. Foreign Direct Investment remained low at $357.80 million, accounting for 5.55 per cent.

Investors channelled most funds into the banking sector. The sector attracted $3.85 billion, which represents 59.75 per cent of total inflows.

The financing sector followed with $1.94 billion, accounting for 30.15 per cent. The production and manufacturing sector received $308.93 million, representing 4.79 per cent.

The United Kingdom emerged as the largest source of capital inflows. It contributed $3.73 billion, representing 57.94 per cent of the total.

The United States followed with $837.91 million, while South Africa accounted for $516.96 million.

The strong growth in capital inflows signals improving investor confidence. However, the low level of Foreign Direct Investment remains a concern.

If Nigeria attracts more long-term investments. This will support sustainable growth in key sectors such as manufacturing and infrastructure.
