US-China Trade Deal Nears Completion, Says Treasury Secretary

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says ongoing trade negotiations with China are progressing well but have yet to be fully concluded.

Speaking to journalists during a media appearance on Thursday, Bessent expressed optimism about finalising a trade agreement with China but noted that “a few technical details” remain unresolved on Beijing’s side. He also confirmed he would be discussing the matter further with President Donald Trump later in the day.

On broader trade relations, Bessent was less certain about developments involving India, remarking that the South Asian nation “has not been a great global actor,” citing its continued close ties with Russia.

Trade tensions between Washington and Beijing resurfaced shortly after President Trump returned to office. The administration imposed a series of steep tariffs on Chinese imports, prompting retaliatory measures from China. At one point, tariff rates soared into triple digits, prompting concern in global markets.

A temporary truce was reached in May, though many of the tariffs remain in place. Chinese goods are still subject to an additional 30% tariff compared to the beginning of the year, while U.S. products entering China face a new 10% duty.

While most of President Trump’s tariff measures are set to expire by 1 August, the ongoing China-US truce includes a separate deadline of 12 August, adding urgency to the negotiations.

Talks between both sides are expected to continue in the coming days.
