AU Raises the Alarm over Middle East Tensions, Warns of Economic Fallout for Africa

The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over the renewed escalation of tensions in the Middle East, warning of serious consequences for global stability and African economies.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from Addis Ababa, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, cited the resumption of drone and missile attacks attributed to Iran against neighbouring states, including the United Arab Emirates, as a major trigger for the rising tensions.

The AU also noted the continued disruption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route, warning that the situation poses a direct threat to international trade and energy supply chains.

According to the statement, the developments risk further destabilising the region and could have far-reaching implications for global energy markets.
