FRSC Arrests 1,691 Traffic Offenders in Nationwide Crackdown on Violations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 1,691 traffic offenders in a five-day nationwide enforcement exercise aimed at strengthening compliance with road safety regulations and reducing crashes across the country.

The operation, codenamed ‘Operation Guduma’, was carried out simultaneously across key transport corridors in 11 states, targeting dangerous driving practices and vehicle-related infractions.

FRSC spokesperson, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the exercise focused on offences such as overloading, mix-loading, use of fake diplomatic number plates, and other fraudulent vehicle identification practices.

According to him, 683 arrests were recorded for overloading and mix-loading, while 1,003 offenders were apprehended for number plate-related violations. In addition, five suspects were arrested for using fake diplomatic number plates.

Ohaeri said the operation revealed a disturbing level of abuse involving unauthorised association plates and other deceptive registration practices used to evade law enforcement scrutiny.

He warned that such violations reflect a growing culture of impunity among road users who deliberately flout safety regulations.

Safety and Security Risks Identified

The Corps also discovered vehicles operating with unlatched containers and dangerously overloaded cargoes, conditions he said significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes, loss of lives, and economic damage.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Mohammed Shehu, described the findings as “revealing and alarming,” stressing that the violations pose both safety and national security threats.

According to him, misuse of diplomatic plates and persistent loading offences go beyond traffic infractions, as they can facilitate criminal activities and undermine public confidence in vehicle identification systems.

Shehu reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to intelligence-led enforcement and vowed to dismantle all forms of traffic violations nationwide.

He insisted that the FRSC would maintain its zero-tolerance stance, noting that road safety remains non-negotiable.

According to him, preventing road crashes translates to saving lives, protecting families, and safeguarding national productivity.

He added that the Corps would expand the operation across major transport corridors and strengthen collaboration with security agencies to ensure offenders are not only arrested but also prosecuted.
