Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Directorate, have arrested 49 suspected internet fraudsters during a coordinated sting operation across several parts of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, noting that the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on the activities of the syndicate.

According to Oyewale, 31 suspects were apprehended on Monday, 22 September, around the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) communities of Ikpa Road and Ekpri Nsukara in the Nwaniba axis of the city. He said others were picked up at the highbrow Shelter Afrique Extension area of Uyo.
“The remaining 18 suspects were arrested two days later, on Wednesday, 24 September, along the Calabar-Itu Road and in Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State,” he added.

The EFCC spokesman disclosed that those arrested included undergraduate students, traders and artisans allegedly involved in cybercrime activities. Items recovered from them comprised one car, 54 mobile phones and nine laptops.
Oyewale stressed that investigations were ongoing and assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.

The EFCC has in recent months intensified its clampdown on internet-related crimes across the country, warning young Nigerians to desist from fraudulent online dealings that tarnish the nation’s image globally.
