DHQ Dismisses Reports of Arrests Over Alleged Coup Plot

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports claiming that 16 Nigerian Army officers were arrested over a supposed plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The rebuttal came after an online publication alleged that the arrests prompted the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities.

In Abuja on Sunday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, described the report as false, malicious, and misleading. He said it aimed to stir tension and distrust among Nigerians.

“The Defence Headquarters has noted a false report suggesting that the Independence Day parade cancellations relate to an alleged military coup,” the statement read.

Gusau explained that the parade was cancelled to allow the President to attend a strategic bilateral meeting abroad. Meanwhile, military units remain focused on combating terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

He added that the previously mentioned arrests were part of routine internal investigations to enforce discipline and professionalism in the Armed Forces.

“An investigative panel has been formed, and we will release its findings. Linking this process to any coup plot is entirely untrue,” Gusau said.

The DHQ reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the Constitution, the Federal Government, and President Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief.

It urged Nigerians to ignore the rumours and continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to safeguard the nation.

“The Federal Government, legislature, and judiciary are working together to ensure safety, unity, and development. Democracy is here to stay,” the statement concluded.
