8 Rescued as Three-storey Building Collapses in Abuja

Panic swept through Jikwoyi Phase 1 on Friday morning after a three-storey building under construction collapsed and trapped workers under heavy debris.

In a statement, FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Command received a distress call around 9:00 a.m. and immediately deployed emergency teams to the scene.

It said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, led the response alongside the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. Officers secured the area and immediately began rescue efforts.

Rescue Efforts Intensify

Rescue teams from the National Emergency Management Agency, the Nigerian Red Cross, Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Administration joined the operation. Representatives of CGC Construction Company also supported the search.

Officials said 17 workers were on site when the building collapsed. Rescuers pulled eight victims from the rubble and rushed them to Sisters of the Nativity Hospital for treatment. Nine others escaped without injuries.

Rescue teams continue to search the debris for anyone still trapped.

Investigation Ordered

CP Sanusi has ordered a full investigation into the collapse. The police will work with the Federal Capital Development Authority to determine the cause.

He said investigators will interrogate all those involved in approving and supervising the project. Authorities aim to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.

Police urged residents to stay calm and remain alert. They also advised the public to report emergencies or suspicious activity through the Command’s control room lines.

Friday’s collapse has raised fresh concerns about building safety in Nigeria’s fast-growing cities, where weak enforcement continues to put lives at risk.
