Tinubu Pledges Transparent Use of Subsidy Savings

By Esther Ososanya

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that savings from the removal of fuel subsidies will be used transparently to fund infrastructure, social welfare, and economic reforms.

Speaking at the 2025 National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance in Abuja, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to responsible fiscal leadership.

Represented by Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, the president emphasised that Nigeria’s future depends not on what it earns but on how it spends.

“Fiscal governance is the lifeblood of national development. Without accountability and transparency, no nation can prosper,” Tinubu stated.

Tech-Powered Transparency: No More Missing Funds

The president highlighted ongoing efforts to digitise Nigeria’s public finance systems. Key platforms like the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), and the Open Treasury Portal are helping to trace every naira.

These tools, he said, are crucial in closing financial loopholes, holding public officers accountable, and keeping citizens informed about where their money goes.

One Nation, One Wallet: Everyone Has a Role to Play

This year’s conference, themed “Fiscal Governance in Nigeria: Charting a New Course for Transparency and Sustainable Development”, attracted stakeholders from the National Assembly, civil society, government agencies, and the private sector.

Tinubu urged stronger collaboration, stressing that transparency must not be left to government alone. Strengthening public accounts committees and empowering oversight institutions, he said, are key steps toward financial discipline and national progress.

President Tinubu was clear: the savings from subsidy removal will not vanish into hidden budgets or wasteful projects. Instead, they will fund visible development roads, hospitals, schools, and strategic economic interventions.

He added that responsible use of public funds will help restore citizen trust and inspire a culture of shared national accountability.

Turning Talk Into Tangible Reform

The 2025 conference aims to produce real, actionable reforms that will shape Nigeria’s public finance system. If implemented, these solutions could redefine how the nation plans, spends, and audits public funds for years to come.
