Dangote Refinery has announced plans to begin the local production of surfactants, a key raw material used in the manufacture of detergents and other cleaning products in Nigeria.

Surfactants are essential ingredients in household and personal care detergents, commonly used for washing clothes, cleaning surfaces and maintaining personal hygiene.

They are produced by refining petroleum or natural oils into compounds such as linear alkyl benzene, which is further processed into cleaning agents used in detergents.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, the Chief Executive Officer, David Bird, said arrangements had been finalised to install a linear alkyl benzene (LAB) plant that will support the production of the material.

Boost For Local manufacturing and Regional Demand

According to Bird, the initiative is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on imported raw materials.

It is also expected to ease pressure on foreign exchange and lower production costs for manufacturers, benefits that could ultimately translate to reduced prices for consumers.

He noted that products such as fuels, lubricants and detergents are basic necessities and should be widely accessible rather than treated as luxury items, especially given Nigeria’s large population and growing demand across the West African sub-region.

Bird added that the project would help expand domestic production of detergents and cleaning products, describing it as part of a broader reinvestment strategy aimed at boosting economic sustainability and industrial self-sufficiency in Nigeria and other wider regions.
