Boko Haram Insurgents Attack Trucks, Tighten Siege on Food Supply Routes in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) insurgents have again attacked trucks carrying food supplies to Maiduguri, Borno State. The attack marks a renewed assault on commercial activities along key supply routes.

The incident happened on Saturday along the Monguno–Guzamala axis. It occurred between Burmari and Garin Kashim villages in Guzamala Local Government Area, sources said.

The insurgents intercepted two articulated trailers and three dump trucks loaded with beans and heading to Maiduguri. They blocked the vehicles, deflated their tyres and set the trailer heads on fire. The attackers then fled into nearby bushes.

One of the drivers said he abandoned his truck and ran into the bush when the attack began.

He added that the assailants appeared to be the same group that attacked trucks carrying maize and building materials on the route about five days earlier. The repeated incidents point to a sustained targeting of commercial traffic.

Another eyewitness said community members quickly intervened and put out the fire. Their action stopped the flames from spreading to the trailer bodies and helped the drivers escape unharmed.

Drivers using the route have complained about the lack of security patrols. They said soldiers are not strategically deployed along the Monguno–Guzamala axis, unlike other high-risk roads in the state.

Because of the repeated attacks, several truck owners have withdrawn their vehicles from the route. This decision has further disrupted food supply movements into Maiduguri.

A security source said the insurgents are targeting commercial vehicles to frustrate government plans to resettle displaced communities and revive economic activities along the corridor.
