Amid the tensions that erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, the newly elected National Chairman of the PDP, Taminu Turaki, called on United States President Donald Trump to intervene and “save democracy in Nigeria.”
Turaki made the appeal while addressing journalists at the party headquarters following attempts by the two factions to hold parallel meetings.
The crisis escalated after Wike’s faction clashed with Turaki’s group and was reportedly forced out of the secretariat. Turaki accused a minister widely interpreted as Wike of leading thugs into the premises with the alleged support of police operatives.

He said the situation posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability and urged the international community to intervene.
“I want to call on President Trump… come and save democracy in Nigeria, democracy is under threat,” Turaki declared. “I cannot understand how a certain minister of the Federal Republic will be leading thugs with the active connivance of the police to create mayhem here. We are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, our democracy and our mandate.”
Wike Faction Announces Expulsions, Dissolves State Executives
Earlier in the day, the Wike-backed faction announced the expulsion of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal. It also dissolved party executives in Oyo, Bauchi, Ekiti, Zamfara, Edo and Lagos states.
Party leaders have expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, accusing security agencies of failing to remain neutral as the crisis inside the opposition party intensifies.
