…Says Orji Kalu was quoted out of context
The Senate has dismissed reports alleging moves to impeach the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, describing such claims as baseless and misleading.
Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), made the clarification on Tuesday at the National Assembly, stressing that no discussion or plan to remove Akpabio took place among lawmakers.
Kalu’s comments taken out of context
Bamidele explained that the statement credited to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), Chairman of the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC), was misconstrued and taken out of context.
“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues here. There was, in fact, no discussion around the removal of His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as President of the Senate,” Bamidele clarified.

He noted that the upper chamber remains united under Akpabio’s leadership, adding that senators are focused on addressing urgent national issues rather than being distracted by false reports.
Senate insists on unity
The Senate Leader further emphasized that the report was a deliberate attempt to cause division and confusion among Nigerians, assuring that members of the Red Chamber remain solidly behind Akpabio.
“We are totally united in this Senate, and there is no tension whatsoever. Reports suggesting division are deliberate attempts to create confusion in the minds of the public,” he said.

“At this time, we have a zero level of tolerance for distractions. There are pressing issues of public importance that require our full attention,” he added.
Kalu: ‘We are one big family’
Earlier, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu had addressed journalists at the National Assembly, where he described rumours of a rift among senators as a “family misunderstanding,” insisting that the matter had been settled.
“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen,” Kalu said.
Deputy Senate President commends clarification
Presiding over Tuesday’s plenary, Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North), commended Senator Bamidele for setting the record straight and urged the public to disregard unfounded impeachment rumours.
“Thank you, our capacity leader, for this clarification. All and sundry should please take note,” Barau remarked.
