Nigeria Eyes Guinness World Record for Longest Dining Table

The Federal Government of Nigeria is setting its sights on a new Guinness World Record (GWR), this time for the longest dining table. The event is part of the upcoming ‘Oriki: Taste of Culture’ Gastronomy Festival, scheduled for December 6, 2025, in Abuja.

Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), Abisoye Fagade, announced that the record-breaking dining setup will stretch 3.6 kilometers, long enough to seat between 2,000 and 3,000 guests.

Speaking during a briefing attended by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, Fagade described the event as both a cultural showcase and a tourism booster, designed to project Nigeria’s rich culinary heritage onto the global stage.

“We plan to break the record on the morning of December 6 and use the same table for a dining event later,” Fagade said. “There will be food, culture, music, and comedy in the evening, showing that Abuja can also host major cultural events in December.”

The gastronomy festival, according to NIHOTOUR, is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism value chain through skills development, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment.

Minister Musawa praised the initiative, calling gastronomy an emerging pillar in Nigeria’s creative economy alongside film, music, and fashion.

“When we talk about economic growth and youth development, gastronomy plays a role just like film, music, and fashion,” she said. “People eat every day, and Nigeria has made significant progress in showcasing its food globally.”

She also lauded Nigerian chefs and culinary entrepreneurs for promoting the nation’s identity through food, turning local recipes into global cultural exports.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to officially unveil the festival and the record attempt in Abuja.

Currently, Cairo, Egypt, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest dining table, measuring 3,189.93 meters, achieved in 2019. Nigeria’s proposed 3.6-kilometer table would comfortably surpass that milestone, potentially earning the nation a new spot in the global record books.
