The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned Nigerians about fake medicinal cannabis containing dangerous substances. The alert follows the recovery of a large consignment and the arrest of a suspected kingpin in Lagos.
Credible intelligence led to the arrest of 28-year-old Afeez Salisu, also known as “Malu”, on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
He was caught at his home at 2 Akala Street, off Umoru Street, Idi Oro, Mushin. Salisu was reportedly packaging and selling fake medicinal cannabis in designer pouches and cups.
NDLEA recovered 16.4 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, including strains like Colorado, Arizona, Canadian Loud, and Ghana Loud.

Investigations showed that these products are highly addictive and harmful.
The Agency confirmed that the substances could cause severe mental health problems. Effects include psychosis, acute anxiety, paranoia, and long-term cognitive damage. Young people are particularly at risk.

NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) warned that criminals are exploiting the global discussion on medicinal cannabis to sell dangerous products.
“Cannabis remains illegal in Nigeria. Any product sold as ‘medicinal cannabis’ locally is fake, dangerous, and illegal,” he said.
