Bayelsa Deputy Governor Begs Court To Stop Impeachment plot for Refusing to Defect

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop what he described as a plot to remove him from office.

Ewhrudjakpo told the court that some members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly were planning to impeach him because he refused to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2219/2025, the deputy governor prayed the court to issue an interim injunction to protect his position until the main case is determined.

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, the Attorney-General of Bayelsa State, the Chief Judge of the state, and the Clerk of the House were listed as defendants in the case.

Justice Emeka Nwite, however, refused to grant the interim order.

Instead, he directed the deputy governor to put the defendants on notice so they could appear before the court on November 13 to explain why the request should not be granted.

Ewhrudjakpo’s counsel, Mr Reuben Egwuaba, moved the application, seeking five interim reliefs.

One of the key prayers was for an order restraining the defendants from impeaching him for refusing to defect from the PDP to the APC before the end of his four-year tenure.

He also asked the court to stop the Assembly or its members from holding any meeting or initiating impeachment proceedings against him for the same reason.

In addition, he requested an order preventing the defendants from recognising or appointing any APC member or any other person as deputy governor in his place while the case is still pending.

Justice Nwite ruled that it was in the interest of justice to summon all parties to appear and show cause before any preservative order could be granted.

The case has been adjourned to November 13 for hearing.
