Lassa Fever: NCDC Confirms 11 New Cases, Two Deaths in Four States

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 11 new Lassa fever cases and two deaths in four states within one week.

In its Week 37 report, the agency said the new cases occurred in Ondo, Bauchi, Kogi, and Anambra States. This marks a slight drop from the 13 cases recorded the previous week.

Since January, Nigeria has logged 7,673 suspected cases and 895 confirmed infections in 21 states and 106 local government areas.

Within the same period, 166 people have died from the disease, raising the case fatality rate to 18.5 per cent. This is higher than the 16.9 per cent reported in 2024.

The NCDC said five states accounted for 90 per cent of confirmed cases.

They are Ondo (33%), Bauchi (23%), Edo (18%), Taraba (13%), and Ebonyi (3%).

The remaining 16 states made up the other 10 per cent.

Although total infections in 2025 are lower than last year, the agency warned that more people are dying from the virus.

It urged Nigerians to report early symptoms and seek prompt medical care to reduce deaths from Lassa fever.
