The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has said the party is prepared to present Nigerians with a credible political alternative capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adebayo said the SDP stands apart from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that it is built on integrity, discipline, and a commitment to national renewal.
“It is rare to find a true SDP member who has any interest in the APC or PDP because what they represent is completely opposite to what the SDP stands for,” he said.
Party Undergoes Leadership Reforms
The former presidential candidate revealed that the party has begun a series of internal reforms aimed at promoting accountability and strengthening its structure.
“When I ran for president, some elements within the party worked against us. There were state chairmen who gave our agent cards to another party,” Adebayo disclosed.
“In Kwara, for instance, we discovered that while we scored over 122,000 votes, only 22,000 were recorded for us. We are replacing such leadership and bringing in new, trustworthy people,” he added.
Building a Selfless, Value-Based Movement
Adebayo explained that the SDP’s long-term focus is to build a political platform rooted in patriotism and selflessness, noting that genuine nation-building requires dedication and sincerity.
“It takes time to build a political party made up of people who are selfless and patriotic, those who are in politics only because they want a better country. That’s what we are doing in the SDP,” he said.
He added that early Nigerian nationalists such as Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Ahmadu Bello inherited a divided system, stressing that the SDP seeks to correct those foundational imbalances through value-based leadership and people-centred governance.
