The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is mourning the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Chief Narcotics Officer (CN) Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Friday that the development was formally conveyed to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), while he was in Maiduguri attending a retreat for heads of agencies organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The late Commander only assumed duty in Cross River on August 18, 2025, after his appointment and posting to the state. While awaiting a permanent residence, he lodged in a Calabar hotel where he stayed until his passing.
According to the Agency, Ogbonna was scheduled to lead his men on an official assignment at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, but by 9 a.m. his officers became concerned after repeated calls and knocks on his hotel door went unanswered. Attempts by hotel staff to force the door open failed until one attendant entered the room through the ceiling, only to find the Commander lifeless.

The Cross River State Police Command was immediately notified, and the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene. Investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.
To support the process, Marwa has directed the Zonal Commander of Zone 14, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar.
Extending condolences to the bereaved family, Marwa described Ogbonna as a committed officer who had already distinguished himself within a short time at the Command. “The Agency stands with the family in this trying moment,” he said, praying for God’s comfort and eternal rest for the deceased.
